BLACKMORE'S NIGHT - Candice Night - mal nachgefragt

Here We Go!

Iceman: "Hi Candice! Secret Voyage"is a great CD, what can you tell us about it?

Candice Night: I feel like each cd that we do is sort of a reflection in time as to where we are or have been during the year we recorded it.
Which is interesting because when we look back to the other cds, its like a scrap book in time of where we've been, what we've experienced and how much we've learned since.
Secret Voyage is sort of a culmination of where we have been this past year as we've been writing the songs. We usually write them on the road, while on tour, so a lot of songs came from the places we've been to , the legends and myths of the towns or regions we were in and the inspiration we have gotten!
Iceman:What's the reason to do a cover tune of "Rainbow Eyes" and "Can't help falling in Love"?

Candice Night: "We're lucky to be able to have a 40 year repertoire of amazing songs that Ritchie has written to be able to choose from. Obviously there are some songs that we wouldn't touch, ones that wouldn't suit my voice like Highway Star or Spacetruckin' or Stargazer.
But the ones that have a really strong melodic content , that we feel we can add something to , we enjoy playing around with and seeing if we can breathe new life into them in distinctive style of our band.
Rainbow Eyes is one of the songs fans have been asking us to reexamine for years, and this year we finally did. We felt like we could add something different to it and make it almost a new song.
Can't Help Fallin' In Love was one of those songs that we played with our friends while sitting around a bonfire pit. We do a lot of songs that people sing along to or request of us in that type of environment.
We had such a fun time playing it and Ritchie loved that tempo for soloing, so we figured, since the last 2 times it was released were slower versions of it, this would be a fun one to do uptempo.
The great thing about being in this band is the creative freedom to do anything at anytime!

Sandy: "Candice, you're a multi-instrumentalist in different kinds of flutes and pipes. That includes the chanters, cornamuse, rauschpfeife and pennywhistle. How it comes that you play so much different and unusual medieval instruments?

"It all started when Ritchie bought a pennywhistle in a New Age shop, and it sat on our kitchen counter for months. Finally I told him someone has to play it or I'm throwing it out!
He tried and got frustrated, so I picked it up and immediately played Renaissance Faire. We both started laughing because it came so naturally, no wrong notes! Then he started collecting shawms and other renaissance woodwinds because he loved the way they looked.
But they sat on a shelf collecting dust. It made me so sad because these instruments were born to create music. So one day I tried to play them and found that the fingering on some of them were similar to the pennywhistle I found so easy to play.
Then it was just a matter of building up the strength to play them, figuring out the reeds and other fingering for the other types of instruments. I love it because it is so rare to find someone who can play these instruments so it allows us to really have a very different sound than a lot of other bands do. It adds dimension to our songs.
Iceman: "Where did you get all this classical, medieval instruments? Expensive and hard too handle, hm?

Candice Night: "Some we have picked up on the road, in dusty old music shops in Prague or early music shops in England. Some over the internet. Some I've received as gifts. They can be expensive, but if you get the right one it is worth it. Its like shopping for a diamond in the rough. They can be hard to handle too, but I'm used to that. I've been living with Ritchie for 19 years so I must like a challenge!
